  Faith, Hope, and Love

While most would say that experience is the best teacher, a   few wise ones learn even without experiencing it.  My friend   (let’s call her Kate) admits that she belongs to the majority   who would rather experience things than be told about it.  I   presume that when one makes a mistake, that person won’t   repeat the same mistake.  And also, I just hope that the   mistake is not life-threatening or irreparable.

Kate has been rushed to the hospital emergency room twice – the first time was a complication of her heart ailment, antibiotics, and alcohol.  She claims that she remembers nearly everything that happened because according to her, she was conscious (although not 100% alert due to the alcohol intake and the pain she was feeling).  So, Kate was examined by the doctor, prescribed to take some medicines, and advised to rest.

The second time was different.  None of her friends including myself could stop her from drinking.  After consuming several bottles of beer, some shots of tequila, followed by shots of lambanog (a Philippine alcoholic beverage most commonly described as coconut wine or coconut vodka, known for its potency and high alcohol content of 80 or 90 proof), Kate’s heart ailment caught up with her.  She suddenly complained about an excruciating pain in her heart, threw up, and fell into a dark abyss.

The following day, much to her surprise, I handed Kate her hospital bill.  She had no idea that when she “fell into a dark abyss”, she actually turned black, blue, and purple, and lost consciousness so her friends and I had to rush her to the hospital emergency room where she was diagnosed and induced with oxygen.

I asked Kate, “What are you trying to prove?”  She answered, “That I can work well, enjoy the company of friends, drink all I want, and be happy.”  “How lame,” I thought to myself.  But somehow, I hoped that the incident would be a turning point for Kate to change her mind about drinking.  I was wrong.  In fact, just a few days after the untoward incident, Kate started drinking again.  I decided to just let her be.

Disregarding Kate’s drinking problem, she really has an appealing personality.  When I introduced her to my male officemate, Peter, he fell for Kate.  And everything became history.  Love was in the air.  I even found out that Kate was sober.

I was very happy.  Kate had stopped drinking alcohol.  Peter loved Kate very much and Kate’s world practically revolved around Peter.  After eight years, news came to me that Peter had confessed that he cheated on Kate, not once, not twice, but four times!

I was speechless.  I could not put into words the feelings I felt.  Inasmuch as I was certain that no words could ever appease Kate.  Peter had admitted that he made a mistake and will never again make the same mistake.  But the fact that he had cheated four times, already makes it difficult to believe that he won’t do it again.

Kate says that her greatest mistake is trusting Peter too much, “I wanted to experience love, and I did.  I never thought that I could love someone so much but I did.  I might still even love too much again, and the one I love might still make the same mistake, just as I will have my own mistakes in life.  I still have faith that everything happens for a reason.  I still have hope that trust can be rebuilt.  I know it’s not easy but it can be done – through faith, hope, and love.  And the greatest of these is love.”

I admire Kate’s discernment.  Reality bites but life goes on.  If something like her situation happens to me, I don’t think I can handle it.  I don’t even know if I have that kind of faith, hope, and love which Kate has.  There really is something more to Kate beyond her drinking problem.  I saw her just yesterday and she looked happy.  She was out with some friends and back to drinking.  And once again, I let her be.

  24/7 @ Synergis

Synergis IT Center is one of the recent trysting places I   frequent  because it presents several alternatives.  It offers a   variety of food that caters to different culinary preferences, a   convenience store, health and beauty services, and free wi-fi!

Commonly known as Sykes Building, where the name   SYKES can be seen on the top portion of the building,   Synergis is located at F.Cabahug St., Ayala Access Road, Panagdait, Mabolo, Cebu City, beside Off-Roads Coffee.

Although it is not the most accessible place if you don’t have private transportation, you can either take a cab, or ride a 03A jeepney (an inexpensive commuter vehicle).

For those with private vehicles, surface parking is available at the front of the building.  Basement parking is also available with approximately 60 car slots.  It can likewise accommodate 30 motorcycles.

If you need to freshen up, restrooms are located at the rear area of the building.  While heading for the restroom, you might notice that the back of Synergis looks out on Kartzone, a 600-meter long go-cart race track for the fast and the furious.  If you have a fascination for speed, try go-carting which is a pretty cool thing to do whether you’re alone or with someone.  But beware – go-carting can cause an insatiable excitement that might leave you wanting for more thrill and adventure.  Eight (8) laps cost Php250 (less than $5) but according to Kartzone’s manager Jonas Eggeling and their president Jess Anthony Garcia, they can extend the number of laps at their discretion.  Kartzone is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Now, going back to Synergis, its ground floor holds a number of commercial establishments such as Bo’s Coffee Club, C24 Foodmart, Betty’s Bakeshop, D’che Spa Salon, Beef Wich Diner, Little Nonki, Golden Bowl Dimsum, Quadro Cucina, Ila Puti, and McDonald’s.

In the mood for coffee, choco, or tea?  Bo’s Coffee Club is open 24 hours.  As the pioneer of coffee culture in Cebu, Bo’s offers an array of coffee – whether served hot (try their Caffee Mocha) or cold (try their White Chocolate Mocha froccino), and you can add-in some coffee jelly.  They also have a tea selection and offer hot or cold chocolate.  I particularly like their Raspberry or Mixed Berry Freeze (but it’s seasonal so, when it’s not available, I go for the Strawberry Freeze) paired with their mouth-watering Milk Choco Brownie Mousse.  In addition, Bo’s serves sandwiches (try their Chicken BLT and Turkey Club), muffins, cookies, pastries, and cakes (try their Super Moist cake and Chocolate Sin).

If you need some quick buys, C24 Foodmart is a 24-hour convenience store offering prepackaged food, snack items, beverages, household products, toiletries, and what-have-you’s.

For breads, cakes, and a little chow, sample the product of Betty’s Bakeshop.  Some of their bestselling breads are the meat roll, ham & cheese, and ensaymada.  For their cakes, try their Chocolate Overload, Chocolate Moist, and Black Forest.  And for their chow which is served with rice, they have interesting names such as the Wake Up Call (4 pieces of longganisa with egg), Rice & Shine (pork tocino with egg), Pork Barrel (pork stewed in special brown sauce served), and Ribbit (saucy spareribs).

You can also choose to relax, revitalize and pamper yourself at D’che (pronounced as di-shay’) Spa Salon.  It is owned by Dhaz Rabilas & Cherry Tolentino thus, the namesake D’che.  They provide affordable therapeutic and aesthetic services from head to toe – body massage, foot spa, diamond peel, trim, color and style, to mention a few.  Unlimited packages are available for individuals while sparty (spa + party) packages are available for groups.  A sparty package, for as low as Php2,999, is a body massage, facial, body scrub, foot spa, or anything enjoyed exclusively with family, friends, or officemates, while having free cocktails with overflowing coffee, tea and juice.  Food and services can be customized according to your request.  D’che is open from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.  For inquiries and reservations, contact (+63 32) 422-9111.

Care for something simple but tasty?  Go to Beef Wich Diner and sink your teeth in their Beef Wich – roast beef morsels, veggie trimmings of tomatoes, onions, and cucumber with regular or hot oriental sauce stuffed in lightly toasted Ciabatta bread (Italian white bread).  They also have a tuna version of this.  Additionally, Beef Wich serves breakfast meals anytime and it is open 24 hours except Sundays.  As you enter the diner, observe the red and black color motif (I am surprisingly reminded of the itzamatch website).

Salivating for Japanese cuisine?  Try Little Nonki.  It’s a Japanese restaurant owned by Ma. Ligaya Machida, who is married to a Japanese national, Akira Machida.  Little Nonki offers reasonably priced Japanese food like sashimi, sushi, tempura, and teppanyaki (iron plate grill), among others.  Experience the warm ambiance amid the welcoming staff and charming interior design, while you sit back and enjoy a Tonkatsu Bento (my all-time favorite) which includes a bowl of miso soup, salad or breaded potato, tamago (egg omelet), 2 pieces of California Maki, pan fried vegetables, Japanese rice, breaded pork laid on shredded cabbage, and a little bit of wasabi.  All Bento’s are only Php180 – Butashogayaki (gingered pork), Tori Karaage (Japanese fried chicken), and Tempura (breaded prawns).  Also, try out their crispy and appetizing treat called Karei Karaage (fried flat fish).

If you want some Chinese food, Golden Bowl Dimsum is open 24 hours everyday except between Sunday 10 p.m. till Monday 10 a.m.  Savor Chinese cuisine such as steamed or fried dimsum (siomai, empress roll, spring roll), congee, rice toppings (lemon chicken, pork patatim, sweet & sour pork), and a lot more.  You might also want to try their refreshing Citrus Cooler beverage.

If you’re in the mood for Filipino cuisine with a twist, check out Quadro Cucina.  The place has a very homey but elegant impression (I personally like the walls with framed family photos in sepia tone), along with friendly and accommodating personnel, managed by Ingrid Leung.  The prices for dishes that are served with rice range from Php55 to Php98, among which is the highly recommended Kare-Kare with Java rice.  Another must-try is the Beef Baby Back Ribs with rice.  The meat falls off the bone and it’s smothered with a secret recipe of special homemade sauce.  M-m-m-m-m… yummy!  And don’t miss out on their milkshakes – strawberry, ube, mango, cookies & cream, and chocolate.  You definitely have to at least try their rich and creamy mango milkshake.  It’s oh so mangolicious!

Interested in Asian fusion?  Go to Ila Puti.  Their blue-green walls, cozy couches, and light music contribute to the relaxing atmosphere.  They serve delectable meals and blended beverages (I like their Banana Berry milkshake).  You have to order from the counter but they serve the dish and drinks to you.  My personal favorite, although a little too salty for my palate, is their version of the Thai bagoong (shrimp paste) fried rice called Nonihm Thai which is bagoong fried rice with Philippine adobo tenderloin tips.  You might also want to try these out:

Mushroom Milkfish – Fried boneless bangus in curry sauce with mushroom served with rice

Pasta Puti – Fettucine pasta in rich white sauce with mushrooms and bacon bits, plus a couple of bread sticks

Saigon Adobo – Spicy lemongrass tenderloin served with garlic shrimp fried rice and Nuoc Nam (sweet and sour dip)

Stroganov – tenderloin in thick sour cream sauce served with garlic rice

And what about fast food?  You can drop by McDonald’s anytime of the day because it’s open 24 hours.  In fact, right now I’m imagining their Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, Chicken McNuggets, and the simply irresistible McFlurry!

So, that’s Synergis.  I hope you didn’t forget about the free wi-fi (powered by Dominion).  You might want to take along your wi-fi ready laptop or PDA and be online for work or play.  You and your friend might even want to go online and chat your heart away should the “cat get your tongue” during your date.  Perhaps an online conversation would be better (for the moment) rather than an offline face-to-face encounter.  This situation might seem awkward but it may be interesting.

Indeed, I take pleasure in dining and being online (for work), both at the same time.  So, see you at Synergis and see you online at itzamatch.  Dine, unwind and chat the night away!

My friend, Ashley, reveals that there are times when she sort   of misses her carefree days – when she would go online to   make new friends, fall in love, go to parties on school   nights, drink tequila and vodka, and go to school still   intoxicated with a blushing red face.  Her friends (including   myself) would cover up for her when teachers asked about   her cherry-colored face.  Allergy was the reason we most   often used and the teachers seemingly believed it.

After years of falling in and out of love, and ingesting alcohol amidst broken relationships, Ashley was known to have a very high alcohol tolerance (which most probably equates to the number of broken relationships).  Amazingly, ever since she decided to spend eternity with this guy named Ron, Ashley has been sober for more than two years now.  She tells me that whenever she sees people who continue to drown themselves with the myriad choices of alcoholic drinks, from punch to rum, from wine to vodka, from beer to tequila, and even drinks with attention-grabbing names like Foreplay, Between the Sheets, Sex on the Beach, and Orgasm, she would instantly recall the times when she used to rationalize drinking alcohol.

Now, Ashley no longer accedes to drinking alcohol.  I asked her if she thinks it would be better to have a legal prescribed (and tolerated) amount of alcohol consumption for different ages, and Ashley said that she’s “For it”.  According to her, the so-called carefree days she had were experiences which involved well-calculated risks (whatever that means).  Despite her constant intoxication with love and alcohol, she maintained relatively high grades which almost always fell just a point short of the Dean’s List.

Ashley thinks that most people are not responsible enough to have well-calculated risks in drinking alcohol.  Some flunk out of school, some get into accidents, some take advantage of the situation, some have unwanted pregnancies, and so on.  Ashley believes that a legal prescribed (and tolerated) amount of alcohol consumption for different ages would be better.  What do you think?  Are you “For it” or “Against it”?

  Of Chocolate Indulgence

It is often said that life is like a box of chocolates.  But sometimes, I think that life is just a box – it’s up to   you to put the chocolates in.

The choices we make comprise the bittersweet experiences that help define, shape, and strengthen our   principles and aspirations in life.  But of course, everything would be meaningless if you don’t have a   family, or someone special, or a friend to share it with.  So go ahead and fill your box with assorted   chocolates.  Here’s a quick list of chocolates to satiate your life:
Plain milk chocolate.
This is an all-time favorite for chocolate lovers.  It implies that we ought to enjoy the simple things in life like flying a kite, planting a tree, looking at fireflies, taking a shower in a waterfall, walking on the beach, or watching the sun rise and the sun set.  We should be awed at the wonderful creation that exists and be thankful for everything that we have.
Nougat chocolate.
White nougat is soft and made with beaten egg whites while brown nougat is firm and made with caramelized sugar.  Thus, nougat can range from chewy to hard depending on its composition.  This means that in life, we should also do something new to a different degree.  Run a marathon – start with 3 kilometers, then 5, and then 10.  Swim with a dog, then with a dolphin.  Spend a night at the house of someone ginormously rich, then spend a night with someone impoverished.  Ask someone you’ve just met to go on a date, or better yet, personally meet someone you met online.  Learn something new each day – a new recipe, a new musical instrument, or a new language.
Almond chocolate.
A crunchy treat.  This suggests that we ought to add some nuts in life.  Do something that scares you.  Defy gravity, or take the plunge.  Go bungee jumping, parasailing, or skydiving (my fiancé swears it’s the greatest adrenalin rush).  Try go-carting, surfing (not the internet), or butanding (whale shark) diving at Donsol in Sorsogon, Philippines, which is the Whale Shark Capital of the World.
Dark chocolate.
For those who relish a strong taste, it’s the chocolate without milk as an additive.  This means that in life, we must do something with a strong fervor like loving without fear or hesitation, always passionately falling in love with the same person, writing a bestseller, singing, savoring different cuisines, traveling, or riding a gondola in Venice (if you can afford it).
Liquor chocolate.
No, this does not contain any alcohol.  This is pure, unadulterated, unsweetened chocolate.  This shows that there are times when we have to do something by ourselves.  Pray.  Send a message in a bottle.  Reflect on our greatest weakness and understand how it can become our greatest strength.  Remember the compliments we receive and forget the insults.  Become debt free.  Quit a bad habit.
Organic chocolate.
This chocolate is made using cocoa beans which are pesticide free.  The cocoa farmers involved are assured to receive a fair price for their produce, which help improve their quality of life.  This indicates that we should wholeheartedly do something good for others.  Teach a kid to read.  Give to a charity… anonymously.  Believe in a cause and be actively involved in it, instead of just thinking about it.
Raisin chocolate.
Fruits in a chocolate make it delightful.  Add some fruit in your life.  Be sweet.  Give your mother, or your special someone a dozen red roses.  Kiss in the rain.  Make someone cry of happiness.  Utter words of appreciation.

Your life is a projection of your own thoughts.  Take responsibility in your choices – your choice of chocolates can be satisfying indulgences. Remember, sometimes life is just a box – it’s up to you to put the chocolates in.
